The IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S has been designed with internal storage, autosensing power supplies (110 V or 220 V), and a simple “select and click” setup wizard, specifically catering to small to medium size businesses and remote offices.  One of the most unique aspects of the IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S is its onboard SAS/SATA storage capability. The chassis can accommodate up to six 3.5 inch hard drives in its standard storage module and six more with an additional storage module.  Another new feature introduced with the IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S is the ability to use 110 V electrical power, which is of particular interest to U.S.-based clients.  The IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S chassis allows for either six single-slot blade servers or three double-slot blade servers.  The IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S chassis allows for either six single-slot blade servers or three double-slot blade servers. You can install a maximum of two storage modules in the IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S chassis with each storage module containing up to six 3.5 inch hot-swap hard drives. Intermixing of SAS-based and SATA-based hard disks within the same storage module is supported. The IBM 8886E1U BladeCenter S supports a number of disk drives types at present which include:

• SAS disk - Serial Attached SCSI disks are designed and should be used for high performance requirements where maximum throughput and transaction capability is needed.
• SATA disk - Serial Advanced Technology Attachment disks are designed to provide lower cost mass storage capacity, when compared to SAS disk, where performance is not a requirement.
• Nearline™ SAS disk - The Nearline SAS disk is also designed to provide lower cost mass storage capacity, when compared to SAS disk, but provides better performance than SATA disk.
