The Cisco Catalyst 6509-E supports modular Cisco IOS Software to minimize unplanned downtime through self-healing processes and simplifies software changes through subsystem in-service software upgrades.The Cisco Catalyst 6509-E Firewall Security System is a 9-slot model providing an easily deployed solution that integrates a Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720 (with integrated policy and multilayer switch feature cards [PFC3/MSFC3] for system control, routing services, and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports); a Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Firewall Services Module providing 5 Gbps of firewall services; and 7 additional open slots for further customization.Cisco Catalyst IPSec VPN systems take advantage of the Cisco 7600/Catalyst 6500 IPSec VPN Services Module and provide up to 2 Gbps of Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) encryption. The Cisco Catalyst 6509-E supports Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series end-to-end operational consistency benefits. The Cisco Supervisor Engine 720-3B is a new member of the Cisco Supervisor Engine 720 Family that ships with PFC3B as the default daughter card. This new supervisor engine offers MPLS capabilities in hardware with route-table scalability up to 256,000 routes.  FWSM to provide 5.5 Gbps performance with the ability to add three more FWSMs for a 20-Gbps system.  These security bundles include two FWSMs for 10-Gbps firewall throughput or high-availability design. Multiple FWSMs can be clustered using either static VLAN configurations or Cisco IOS Software policy-based routing for directing traffic to these FWSMs. Additional FWSMs can be configured with these security bundles for up to four FWSMs in the same chassis, delivering a total of greater than 20 Gbps firewall throughput.
